Now lay on the styles. Right-click on your text layer and choose Blending Options. Under Advanced Blending you’ll want to slide Fill Opacity to 0%. Don’t worry, your text won’t be invisible for long. Continue with the following styles:Here’s a closeup of the Gradient:

How’s that? If you want to add an additional line of type, duplicate your text layer and adjust as desired. If you’re scaling the size of your text, use the transform tool (Ctrl + T) and pay attention to the percentage of change. You’ll want to remember this number in order to scale your layer effects. Say you resize your text by 50% — aftewards, choose Layer > Layer Style > Scale Effects… and crank the scale down to 50% as well. Try it out, you’ll see what I mean.
Brand a piece of wood with this rustic effect.

The cool thing about this effect is the outer glow that creates unique burn patterns depending on the darkness of the background.

Start off with your wood background. Any slab of lumber will do. Oak, maple, even spruce!

Find a western-style typeface for maximum effect. I’m using Stud, 275px large. Any color will do, that’s not important now.
